John Deere 1025R Hood Stuck Closed? How to Get It Open

If you went to open your 1025R hood and the release rod dropped inside the mount (or the mount broke), the hood is now latched shut with nothing to push. This usually happens when the release rod gets pushed in too far with the tool. Don't pry on the hood - the fiberglass cracks. Here are the ways to get to the release, easiest first, and the replacement that keeps it from happening again.

Quick background so it makes sense: the factory hood release is designed to require a tool to open (a European safety-regulation requirement that an engine enclosure not open without a tool). You push a release rod with the tool. Push that rod in too far and it can fall inside the mount, leaving nothing to actuate. The plastic mount can also break (the piece owners post photos of). Either way, the hood is stuck shut.

How to get the hood open

Tractor off, key out. Be honest with yourself up front: every option except the first basically sacrifices the factory mount, so plan on replacing it once you are in. Start with the least destructive.

  1. Long screwdriver or a bent coat hanger. Reach through the grille with a long, skinny screwdriver and push the release directly, or run a bent coat hanger up to the hood latch release near the hood and trip it that way. A flashlight helps. This is the only option that might leave the factory mount intact.
  2. Cut off the existing mount. Removing the broken mount opens up a bigger hole to work through, so you can get a tool onto the release rod or the latch.
  3. Drill out the existing mount. Drilling the mount out gives you the same access. It destroys the mount, so you will be replacing it.
  4. Last resort: cut the metal grille. If you cannot reach the rod or the latch any other way, opening up the metal grille gets you in. This is the most destructive option - only if the others fail.

Whichever route you take, watch the sharp edges and wear eye protection when cutting or drilling.

Replace the mount so it doesn't happen again

By the time the hood is open, the factory mount is usually toast - and even if it isn't, the tool-and-rod design is what got you here. Replace it with the 3DFL Hood Release: a push-button you operate by hand, with no tool to push too far and no rod to drop inside. Manufactured in the USA from globally sourced materials. It mounts at the existing release location with no drilling, in about 20 minutes.

For the step-by-step, see the Hood Release installation guide. For the bigger picture on why the factory release is a hassle in the first place, see the factory hood release writeup.

If the latch itself is cracked

If the fiberglass around the hood latch is cracked or the latch mount is loose, that is a separate structural problem from a dropped release rod. See the cracked hood latch guide for that repair.

Frequently asked questions

My 1025R hood release rod fell inside and the hood is stuck shut. How do I open it?

Start with a long, skinny screwdriver or a bent coat hanger through the grille to push the release directly, or to reach the hood latch release up by the hood. If you cannot get to it, you will need to cut off or drill out the factory mount for access, and only as a last resort cut the metal grille. Do not pry up on the hood, which cracks the fiberglass.

Why did the release rod fall inside?

The factory release requires a tool to push a release rod (a European safety-regulation design). If you push that rod in too far, it can drop inside the mount with nothing left to actuate. The plastic mount can also break, with the same result.

Can I save the factory mount?

Maybe, but only if the screwdriver or coat-hanger method works. Cutting off or drilling out the mount destroys it, so plan on replacing it if you have to go that route.

Will the 3DFL Hood Release replace the broken mount?

Yes. It replaces the factory release at the existing mounting location and gives you a push-button you operate by hand - no tool and no rod to push too far. Verify your year before ordering (2017 and newer 1025R is the primary fit) and send us a photo if you are unsure.

Does the 3DFL Hood Release need a tool to open the hood?

No. It is a push-button you operate by hand. That is the point - it removes the tool-required release and the rod that drops inside.

Does the Hood Release require drilling to install?

No. The install uses the existing mounting points. Any cutting or drilling you did just to get the stuck hood open is separate from mounting the new release.
